A committed public sector HR professional with 7 years experience at a strategic level in community and mental health NHS Trusts, the Regional Office of the NHS Executive and a newly formed Primary Care Trust (PCT). A track record of success in leading significant organisational change and introducing best practice and innovation that enabled the workforce to deliver excellence in patient care.


2000 – date Head of Human Resources, Ravensbourne NHS Trust/Bromley PCT

Appointed in September 2000 to lead the HR function in a time of significant organisational transition.

Successfully managed the HR aspects of the move to PCT status
Leading a health economy wide project on HR Shared Services
Leading a systematic review of HR practice across the PCT in line with the Health Quality Service (HQS) standards
Developed HR and Communications strategies for the new PCT

1999 – 2000 HR Consultant, NHS Executive, London Region

Seconded from October 1999 to September 2000 to take the Regional strategic lead on

The HR aspects of the development of PCTs
The development of HR Management capacity and capability
Developed, designed and maintained website to support PCT development programme

1994 – 1999 Human Resources Director, Lambeth Healthcare NHS Trust

(from 1.4.99 my employment was transferred to South London & Maudsley NHS Trust)

Executive Director of an integrated mental health and community NHS Trust with a budget of £55m and 1400 staff. Managed a team of 18 staff with a budget of £750k.

HR lead of major change programmes:

Closure and reprovision of Tooting Bec hospital services (over 1000 staff)
Transfer of "East Lambeth" community services from King’s Healthcare (150 staff)
Transfer of Cane Hill forensic service from Ravensbourne (100 staff)
Merger of Lambeth Healthcare with 3 other Trusts to form 2 new Trusts

Successful Recruitment and Retention initiatives including ‘Return to Practice’ programmes such that staff in post levels demonstrably improved against the trends in Inner London. Invited to speak at national conferences on recruitment and retention in nursing and flexible learning.

Development of practical strategies to address discrimination including

Chair of consortium of nine Community Trusts which has delivered an innovative positive action programme to develop senior managers from black and minority ethnic groups
Reference site for NHSE Positively Diverse programme
Awareness training, monitoring

Establishment of accredited NVQ centre providing a comprehensive range of 9 awards to support service developments – received National Training Award (Dept. of Education and Employment).

Development of a range of training partnerships including national award-winning collaboration with UNISON – "Return to Learn".

Creation of multi-agency Learning Resource Centre for Trust, Social Services, GP practice and Health Authority managers and staff.

Range of significant employment policy developments e.g. discipline, suspension, smoking at work, HIV and employment, maternity and paternity.

Developed constructive working relationships with Trade Unions such that the Trust experienced no major industrial relations problems.


1992 – 1994 Deputy Director of Human Resources, West Lambeth Community Care NHS Trust

Contributed to delivery of the HR strategy with particular responsibility for pay and rewards strategy, formulation and negotiation of employment policies and providing specialist expertise to support the Director in the management of the Directorate.

Implementing HR policies to support new service models e.g. Healthcare Assistants terms and conditions, audit of staff ‘skills and wishes’

Devolution of recruitment and selection to line management

Development of ‘online’ HR policy and procedure manual before this was a widely used approach


1990 - 1992 Acting Director of Human Resources, Priority Services, West Lambeth Health Authority

During this period I assumed the role of Director on two occasions for a total of 12 months and was responsible for all HR aspects of the progression to Trust status with effect from April 1992.


1986 –1990 West Lambeth Health Authority

Developed my knowledge, skills and experience in the HR field and gained rapid promotion through 4 different roles from a work experience placement in District Personnel to the senior role of Community Unit Personnel Manager.

1985 – 1986 Returned to full-time education to undertake a postgraduate diploma in general management.

1982 – 1985 Following graduation held a variety of jobs in service industries. This included a variety of temporary "manual" jobs as well as 18 months as deputy manager of a City of London pub.

In 1996 undertook the "Common Purpose" educational programme which is a cross sectoral, multi-agency initiative which promotes partnership working. As a result developed significant external partnerships for Trust and from 1996 to 1999 was a Governor of Lambeth College.
